Hospitals and health systems across the nation are adding new cardiovascular services and procedures, and renovating cardiology spaces to meet patient needs.
Here are some of the most recent happenings:
1. Surgeons at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health performed its first combined transcatheter edge-to-edge simultaneous tricuspid valve and mitral valve repair for a high-risk patient who was not an ideal candidate for open-heart surgery.
2. Raleigh, N.C.-based UNC Heart and Vascular renovated and upgraded its cath labs.
3. Hudson, Fla.-based HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital opened a hybrid cardiac/electrophysiology room and renovated its electrophysiology suite.
4. Charlotte, N.C.-based Novant Health launched a robotic mitral valve repair program at its heart institute.
5. New Brunswick, N.J.-based Robert Wood Johnson Medical School developed a preventive cardiology program in partnership with Newark, N.J.-based Rutgers Health and West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health.
6. Brainbridge, Ga.-based Memorial Hospital and Manor opened a cardiac and pulmonary rehab center
7. District of Columbia-based Children’s National Hospital opened a research institute within its Heart and Lung Center using philanthropic contributions of over $12 million.
8. Surgeons at Orlando-based AdventHealth Transplant Institute performed its first heart-after-liver transplant procedure, making AdventHealth one of the few U.S. centers offering the operation. The HALT procedure involved transplanting the liver first to reduce the risk of antibody-mediated rejection before completing a heart transplantation.
9. Clinicians at Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist became the first ever to use a combined pump and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation strategy to stabilize the heart of a patient early in pregnancy.
10. San Francisco-based UCSF Health performed its first heart transplant on a patient who received an artificial heart months earlier.
