Orlando-based AdventHealth Transplant Institute has successfully completed two new transplant procedures.

The institute’s surgeons completed its first living donor liver transplant as part of a newly established program, according to a news release shared with Becker’s. This first procedure involved a four-year-old patient and a family friend who was the living donor.

Surgeons also performed the institute’s first heart-after-liver transplant procedure, making AdventHealth one of the few U.S. centers offering the operation. The HALT procedure involved transplanting the liver first to reduce antibody-mediated rejection risk before completing a heart transplantation.

“Heart After Liver Transplant enables us to care for complex, sensitized patients who may not qualify at many centers,” Ahmad Zeeshan, MD, surgical director of the heart transplant program at AdventHealth, said in the release. “It expands our ability to offer transplantation to individuals who otherwise face significant barriers.”

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
