District of Columbia-based Children’s National Hospital is opening a research institute within its Heart and Lung Center thanks to philanthropic contributions of over $12 million.

The Heart Research Institute will focus its investigational efforts on earlier detection, better treatment and wellness support for children with heart conditions, according to a Feb. 26 hospital news release. The institute’s findings will be translated directly into clinical practices.

Yves d’Udekem, MD, PhD, chief of cardiac surgery at Children’s National, will serve as executive director of the new institute.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
