A surgeon from the Heart Hospital of Austin (Texas) at St. David’s Round Rock became the first in the U.S. to use a carotid artery stent outside of clinical trials.
The device was used in July by the heart hospital’s chief of surgery, Bradley Boone, MD, according to an Aug. 11 news release from St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center.
Dr. Boone used the stent with the transcarotid artery revascularization technique.
“The transcarotid artery revascularization technique, when used in combination with this stent, reduces the amount of time patients are under anesthesia, ultimately lowering the risk of stroke, major complications or death,” the release said.
