Naples, Fla.-based NCH Rooney Heart Institute is the first to use a new technology that makes blood glow green during heart bypass surgery, ABC affiliate Gulf Coast News Now reported Aug. 24.
The process involves injecting harmless dye into the artery or graft, then using a laser built into a camera. This makes the blood glow and allows surgeons to see blood flow in real time while the patient is still in surgery, so they can confirm the bypass is functioning as intended.
