A cardiology team at Manhasset, N.Y.-based North Shore University Hospital’s Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital became the first in the world to implant the industry’s smallest defibrillation lead.

The procedure was led by Laurence Epstein, MD, system director of electrophysiology at New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, the system to which North Shore University Hospital belongs, according to a Jan. 7 news release from the health system.

The FDA approved the Medtronic OmniaSecure defibrillation lead in April for adults and children as young as 12 who are at risk of sudden cardiac death. The device is used within an implantable cardioverter defibrillator or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
