The annual report details the latest research and medical achievements by the cardiologists at the center.
“We are particularly proud that the Smidt Heart Institute takes exceptional care of the patients with the most complex and challenging conditions, which have often been deemed too risky for intervention elsewhere,” Eduardo Marbán, MD, PhD, executive director of the Smidt Heart Institute, said in a statement. “We don’t always succeed in turning the tide of disease, but we never stop trying.”
Five notes:
- The institute performed 157 thoracic organ transplants, more than any other program in California, in 2021.
- Cardiologists performed over 30,000 hours of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation care in 2021.
- Four hundred and eighteen high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions have been performed with Impella support.
- One hundred and fifty robotic minimally invasive coronary bypass operations have been performed.
- The institute had support from 1,165 donors in 2021.
