The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu performed Hawaii’s first left ventricular assist device implantation, Hawaii News Now reported Oct. 20.

The 34-year-old patient was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Patients in Hawaii typically must fly to the mainland for the procedure and stay there for six months to a year. Instead, the patient had the surgery and recovered in Hawaii, and he was discharged Oct. 19.

“This is the first technology here so we’re really proud that Queen’s is able to bring this to Hawaiʻi,” Jason Chang, The Queen’s Health Systems president and CEO, told the news outlet.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
