After establishing a catheterization lab and implementing preventive screening programs in 2016, a University Hospitals medical center saw a decrease in cardiovascular disease-associated mortality.
The new lab and prevention programs were part of a $2.5 million investment in Cleveland-based University Hospitals Harrington’s Heart & Vascular Institute at the UH Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio, according to a March 24 news release from the health system.
The hospital analyzed CDC data and hospital records to evaluate any correlation between the investment and ischemic heart disease-related death rates in the Portage County region.
Here is what to know regarding the analysis:
- More than 3,000 catheterizations were performed at the UH Portage Medical Center catheterization lab between 2016 and 2019.
- The crude death rate for ischemic heart disease during that time period decreased by 36% among individuals ages 65-74, 28% among individuals 85 and older, and 21% among individuals ages 75-84.
