A Los Angeles-based UCLA Health team has performed a rare robotic procedure on a patient’s heart and lungs.

The 77-year old lung cancer patient was scheduled to undergo a robotic lobectomy when physicians uncovered the underlying heart issues, according to a Feb. 20 news release from the health system.

Working sequentially, surgeons performed a mitral valve repair followed by a lobectomy using the same robotic system. Both procedures were successful.

The approach reduced the patient’s anesthesia exposure, postoperative pain and recovery time while eliminating the need for separate hospitalizations, the release said.
