Bay Shore, N.Y.-based South Shore University Hospital became the first hospital on Long Island to complete a robot-assisted total endoscopic mitral valve repair.
The procedure was performed using the DaVinci Xi surgical robot, which enables physicians to conduct the repair through small ports between the ribs, avoiding the need for a sternotomy. This method offers patients benefits including smaller incisions, less pain, reduced blood loss and shorter recovery times, according to a Jan. 16 news release.
The surgery was performed by Robert Kalimi, MD, chair of cardiothoracic surgery, and Joshua Newman, MD, cardiac surgeon at South Shore. The robot-assisted approach preserves chest wall integrity, and improves visualization and precision during the procedure.
The mitral valve repair marks the latest addition to South Shore’s cardiac surgery capabilities, which include interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and open-heart surgery.
South Shore is part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, one of the largest health systems in the state.
