Want to bring more innovation to your heart center or cardiovascular department? Start by supporting and rewarding staff who work to bring innovation in, Mark Ricciardi, MD, section chief for interventional cardiology and structural heart disease at Warrenville, Ill.-based Endeavor Health, said in an upcoming Becker’s “Cardiology + Heart Surgery Podcast.”
“I think all institutions have people who are passionate about innovation and clinical research, who do it for the right reasons,” Dr. Ricciardi said.
Identifying those people who “passionately and selflessly work to bring innovation and clinical research to the practice” is the first step to improving innovation and is fundamental to creating a culture of innovation.
“Hospitals and leaders, in my opinion, need to view themselves not just as me-too providers of care, but create a system of providers who can deliver care that’s special and unique,” Dr. Ricciardi said. “By doing that, they need to prioritize innovation and clinical research through investment, and treat research and innovation efforts with the same focus we have on clinical care. Doing high-quality clinical research that explores better ways to treat our patients shouldn’t be viewed as, ‘we’ll get around to that when we get a chance.’ I think they have to be done in parallel, research and innovation have to be considered integral to how these systems approach their role in the medical community.”
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
