Ravenna, Ohio-based University Hospitals Portage Medical Center reduced low-risk chest pain admission and generated more than $940,000 in program value through a quality improvement initiative.

Researchers at the University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute at the rural hospital evaluated the results of 320 low-risk chest pain patients, according to an Oct. 14 news release shared with Becker’s. Patients were discharged from the emergency department with outpatient stress testing ordered to be completed within 72 hours.

Of those patients, 63% completed their stress-test.The program also identified clinically significant coronary disease requiring additional intervention in a subset of patients, and no patients in the study died.

This initiative reduced low-risk chest pain admissions, allowed patients to be safely evaluated outside the hospital and reduced healthcare costs, the release said.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
