A team at New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center performed its first pediatric heart transplant March 28.
It was also the first pediatric heart transplant to be performed on Long Island, according to an April 1 news release from the health system.
The patient arrived at the hospital with acute heart failure and was stabilized with the emergency use of a heart-lung bypass machine before it was determined they would need a new heart.
The procedure was performed by Timothy Martens, MD, PhD, surgical director of pediatric heart transplant at Cohen Children’s Damaghi Family Pediatric Surgical Operating Complex.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
