The American Heart Associate has summarized the latest research to identify risk factors and inform care recommendations for maternal stroke prevention, treatment and recovery.
The “Prevention and Treatment of Maternal Stroke in Pregnancy and Postpartum,” scientific statement was published Jan. 28 in Stroke.
Stroke occurs in about 20 to 40 of every 100,000 pregnancies and accounts for about 4% to 6% of all pregnancy related deaths in the U.S., according to a Jan. 28 news release from the American Heart Association.
The statement highlights risk factors for stroke during and after pregnancy, emphasizes primary prevention, provides insights on the diagnosis and treatment of maternal stroke as well as considerations for delivery and recovery after stroke.
