World’s 1st infant-to-infant heart transplant recipient turns 40

The recipient of the world’s first successful infant-to-infant heart transplant will turn 40 years old Nov. 16, having lived with the same transplanted heart his whole life. 

The transplant was performed Nov. 20, 1985, by Leonard Bailey, MD, at Loma Linda (Calif.) University Medical Center, according to a Nov. 5 news release from Loma Linda University Health.

Since then, 570 pediatric heart transplants have been performed at Loma Linda University Health.
