UTHealth Houston established a department of cardiology at McGovern Medical School, effective May 1.
The department is led by founding chair Biswajit Kar, MD, and becomes the school’s 24th academic department. Faculty, including more than 70 physicians and scientists, will transition into the new structure, according to an April 24 news release.
The move is intended to expand cardiovascular care, research and education efforts across the region by consolidating existing programs under a single department.
The department will operate within the system’s heart and vascular service line, and continue collaborations with partners including Houston-based Memorial Hermann and Harris Health.
