Galveston-based University of Texas Medical Branch has launched a new heart and vascular institute alongside a new department of cardiovascular medicine.

The Sealy Heart and Vascular Institute will be supported by a $30 million grant from the Sealy & Smith Foundation, according to an Aug. 20 news release from the health system.

The system’s new department of cardiovascular medicine will “consolidate and accelerate efforts in cardiovascular science and clinical excellence under a unified academic and operational structure,” the release said.

Hani Jneid, MD, will serve as the inaugural chair of the new department as well as vice president of cardiovascular operations and director of the Sealy Heart and Vascular Institute.
