Electrophysiologists at the Austin-based Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute at St. David’s Medical Center are the first in the nation to implant a new defibrillation lead.

The FDA-approved device is a specialized, insulated wire that connects to an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator or cardiac resynchronization therapy device to correct abnormal rhythm, according to a Jan. 30 system news release. The new device is the world’s smallest, catheter-delivered defibrillation lead.

The first procedure was performed by Robert Canby, MD, and Amin Al-Ahmad, MD, on Jan. 7.
