Here are three notes from the report:
- In 2019, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology released guidelines that recommended against the frequent use of aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease among patients who are not at risk “because of lack of net benefit.”
The guidelines stress aspirin use is specifically not recommended for adults over the age of 70 or for adults of any age who have an increased risk of bleeding.
- Regardless, 57% of people between ages 50 and 80 without a history of cardiovascular disease are still regularly taking low-dose aspirin, according to a study published March 2024.
- The report encourages consumers to discuss aspirin use with their physicians, as a multitude of individual factors contribute to its necessity.
