Columbus-based OhioHealth has tested an AI tool that flags echocardiogram results to accelerate evaluation and treatment of valvular heart disease.
Findings from the ALERT trial were published March 29 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, according to a May 4 news release.
Here are five things to know:
- The tool sends real-time alerts to physicians when patients may meet criteria for further heart and vascular evaluation based on echocardiogram results.
- The study was conducted across five academic and community-based healthcare systems.
- Patients flagged by the tool were more likely to be referred to specialists sooner and undergo procedures within 90 days.
- The approach targets delayed detection of conditions such as severe aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation, which are often diagnosed at later stages.
- Researchers plan to explore the use of the tool across additional cardiovascular diseases.
