Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health performed three heart transplants on the same day and a fourth the following day in a system record.
Heart surgeons were notified of the first donor heart at 9:30 p.m. on a Thursday, then the second came in at 10:30 p.m. and the third at 2:30 a.m. The fourth heart became available the next day, according to a May 26 system news release.
“We had three heart transplants that were going at the same time, which is unheard of for MUSC,” Lucas Witer, MD, one of the heart surgeons involved in the transplants, said in the release. “It’s our first time that we’ve done that.”
All four transplants were successfully completed that weekend and the patients are doing “exceedingly well,” Dr. Witer said.
MUSC Health has the only heart transplant center in the state.
