The research institute is part of Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine and launched earlier this summer, the health system said in a July 21 news release.
Dr. Swirski, an expert in cardiovascular immunology research, will also serve as a professor of medicine, and professor of diagnostic, molecular and interventional radiology.
“The cardiovascular research institute will experience rapid growth over the next several years as it expands thematically and builds links with other institutes and departments,” Dr. Swirski said. “Together with cardiology, we will build an international powerhouse for cardiovascular research. We will focus on lifestyle prevention, systems physiology and bioengineering, and genomic medicine.”
A frequently cited researcher, Dr. Swirski’s past studies have focused on the role of immunity and inflammation in atherosclerosis, or plaque buildup along the artery walls.
Dr. Swirski joins Mount Sinai from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, both Boston-based, where he worked as a professor and principal investigator. His most recent discovery, published in Nature, identified a signaling pathway in humans and mice that may help adjust inflammation to shield against Alzheimer’s.
