Physicians at the Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute at Houston-based Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center are the first to use a newly approved tissue valve for heart valve replacement.
The valve, which treats aortic or mitral valve disease, has a new frame configuration that allows it to expand to facilitate future cardiac interventions if needed, according to a system news release.
“We are constantly innovating and strive to offer our patients the latest in treatment options,” Danny Ramzy, MD, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and chair of cardiac surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, said in the release. “This new valve will allow us to preserve and facilitate future patient options for lifetime management of their mitral or aortic valve disease.”
Dr. Ramzy implanted the valve in an open-chest procedure Aug. 24 and a robotic procedure Aug. 26.
