The surface of the chip is layered with a combination of gold and silica, enhancing the chip’s electric and magnetic fields and forming a “metasurface,” according to an Oct. 16 report from New Atlas.
When patient blood interacts with the pattern of gold and silica on the chip’s metasurface, chemical analysis through spectroscopy is quickly able to identify heart attack biomarkers, even at low concentrations, within minutes.
