The American Heart Association projects 6 in 10 adults will have cardiovascular disease by 2050 — and the rates of heart valve disease are expected to triple by 2060.

The organization said heart valve disease as a key focus to improve patient care and reduce deaths, especially as the aging population increases, according to a Feb. 22 AHA news release.

Here are four things to know:

1. Projections indicate heart valve disease is expected to double by 2040 and triple by 2060.

2. Women are more likely to be misdiagnosed or diagnosed later than men with heart valve disease. Women also experience the condition differently, which may contribute to delayed care. Women are also less likely to be recommended for surgical interventions.

3. Many patients do not know what treatment is available to them or their risk. Having conversations with patients and referring them to cardiologists for echocardiograms can ensure appropriate care.

4. A clinical history and stethoscope exam can detect early warning signs before symptoms of heart valve disease become severe. Early diagnosis can expand treatment options and prevent complications.
