Southfield, Mich.-based Corewell Health has performed the world’s first documented single-port robotic mitral valve repair.

The approach replaces the traditional five-port technique with a single robotic port and a second small access incision, reducing tissue disruption, according to a July 14 news release. Corewell Health said some patients may return home as soon as three days after surgery.

Mitral valve regurgitation affects an estimated 3% to 5% of the population and can lead to heart failure, atrial fibrillation and premature death if left untreated. Corewell Health’s Royal Oak program has achieved a mitral valve repair rate greater than 99% over the past two years using a repair-first strategy.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
