Both thoracic and vascular surgery specialties hit a 100% fill rate for Match Day 2025, according to the National Resident Matching Program’s data.
Compared to last year, the National Resident Matching Program saw a 5.3% increase in certified applicants and a 4.2% increase in positions.
Here is what to know from the thoracic and vascular surgery data:
Thoracic surgery
- All 54 available thoracic surgery positions were filled.
- Of those positions, 50 were filled by senior MD students, two were filled by senior DO students and two were filled by non-U.S. citizen students or graduates of an international medical school.
- Between 2021 and 2025, the number of available thoracic surgery positions rose from 46 to 54, though the specialty’s share of overall available positions remained the same at 0.1%.
Vascular surgery
- All 102 available vascular surgery positions were filled.
- Of those positions, 84 were filled by senior MD students, nine were filled by non-U.S. citizen students or graduates of an international medical school, four were filled by graduate MD students, two were filled by senior DO students and two were filled by U.S. citizen students or graduates of an international medical school.
One accepted applicant was categorized as “other,” meaning they were either a previous graduate of an MD or DO medical school, a Canadian or Fifth Pathway applicant.
- Between 2021 and 2025, the number of available vascular surgery positions rose from 79 to 102 and the specialty’s share of overall available positions rose from 0.2% to 0.3%.
