Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine is establishing the Smilow Center for Precision Therapeutics with a $25 million gift from the Smilow Foundation. The center will advance gene-editing and other precision therapies designed to address the underlying causes of cardiovascular disease.

Thomas Cappola, MD, the William Smilow professor and division chief of cardiovascular medicine, will lead the center. The center aims to develop the first curative therapies for heart disease for the first time, according to an Oct. 8 system news release. The center will leverage Penn-led discoveries through innovative research, first-in-human clinical trials and patient care. It will bring a multidisciplinary team of experts from the departments of cardiovascular medicine, physiology, systems pharmacology and translational therapeutics, bioengineering, radiology and others.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
