California has performed the first cardiac arrhythmia ablation in an ambulatory surgery center in the state, following a CMS policy change.
In 2025, CMS added several complex cardiac arrhythmia ablation procedures to the ASC Covered Procedures List for 2026. California is the first state to move the procedure into the ambulatory setting, as each state maintains its own regulatory requirements governing which procedures may be performed in ASCs, according to a July 23 news release from advocacy organization Heart Rhythm Advocates.
Physician leaders, specialty societies and patient advocates supported the policy change through regulatory comments and engagement with policymakers.
Moving cardiac ablations to ASCs may benefit patients through greater access to care, increased convenience and additional treatment options compared to hospital-based settings, the release said.
