California has the most heart hospitals that were high performing in cardiology care, with 20 facilities, followed by New York that had 10 hospitals, the U.S. News and World Report found.
U.S. News evaluated nearly 500 heart hospitals nationwide for the specialty, which covers care for patients who need surgical or catheter-based interventions to prevent sudden heart failure or fatal vascular rupture, as well as patients with irregular heartbeats or weakened heart muscles, U.S. News told Becker’s.
This marks the first year the cardiology rankings are built on outcomes-focused data drawn from U.S. News’ procedures and conditions ratings, covering eight cohorts: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart arrhythmia, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart attack, heart failure, pacemaker implantation and transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
Hospitals had to clear a two-stage eligibility process, including minimum procedure volumes and a transfer-pattern check meant to identify major referral centers, narrowing an initial pool of 665 hospitals down to the 488 that made this year’s rankings. Survival makes up 45% of a hospital’s score, with the rest split across measures including discharge-to-home rates, readmission prevention and patient experience.
