Deborah Heart and Lung Center debuts leadless device

Browns Mills, N.J.-based Deborah Heart and Lung Center has performed its first commercial implant of the Wireless Stimulation of the Endocardium (WiSE) System, becoming the first hospital in Southern New Jersey to offer the treatment.

The procedure targets heart failure patients previously considered untreatable with traditional cardiac resynchronization devices, according to a July 24 news release from the organization.

“This device represents a significant breakthrough in pacing technology,” Raffaele Corbisiero, MD, Deborah’s division director of electrophysiology and pacing, said in the release. “The ability to deliver pacing therapy using a device the size of a grain of rice is revolutionary.”

The WiSE System, manufactured by EBR, is the first and only leadless device to deliver left ventricular endocardial pacing. It mimics the heart’s natural electrical activation by stimulating endocardial tissue inside the left ventricle, expanding treatment options for patients who have exhausted conventional therapies and are not candidates for traditional pacing devices with leads.

The debut of the procedure follows a $108 million expansion on which Deborah broke ground in February 2022 that added new robotic technology to its electrophysiology labs alongside enhancements to its cardiac catheterization labs.
