Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor had the lowest heart attack readmission ratio for the second year in a row, according to CMS data.
As part of its hospital readmissions reduction program, CMS measures excess readmissions for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hip/knee replacement and coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The most recent data, updated May 13, has readmissions between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2024.
Ratios are calculated by dividing a hospital’s predicted rate of readmissions with the expected rate of readmissions, based on the average rate of hospitals with similar patient populations. A ratio below 1.0 means fewer readmissions than expected; above 1.0 means more.
Last year, the hospitals with the lowest heart attack readmission ratios were Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center at 0.7224, Memorial Mission Hospital and Asheville (N.C.) Surgery Center with 0.7663 and Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester (Minn.) with 0.7853.
