Community hospitals bumping out AMCs in cardiology opportunities

Traditionally, academic medical centers have provided cardiologists with the most opportunities for research, medical education and other career advancements, but in recent years, community hospitals and private practices have been offering these same advancements, according to an article published on the American College of Cardiology website.

“The boundary between AMCs and non-AMCs continues to blur,” the article authors wrote. “Perhaps it is time to stop seeing these worlds as separate and instead embrace a shared mission to advance science, deliver exceptional patient care, and sustain our profession through curiosity, innovation and collective dedication.”

Cardiologists do not need to be affiliated with AMCs to have meaningful advancements in the field any longer. Landmark clinical trials are increasingly popping up in community hospitals, and physician participation is more dependent on patient enrollment potential, rather than hospital affiliation.

More hospitals are also establishing residency and fellowship programs to draw in medical students while offering additional medical education opportunities to private practice cardiologists. Cardiology fellows are now seeking nontraditional employment models to achieve their professional goals.

“This realization underscores an urgent need: Professional societies must create more supportive environments for extracurricular impact across all practice settings,” the article said. “Smaller organizations should have access to shared infrastructure, digital platforms and AI-based tools that can lower barriers to participation. Incentives such as CME credit and [maintenance of certification] points for research activity can also encourage greater engagement, aligning professional development with practice requirements.”
