Phoenix-based Banner Health has completed over 50 total artificial heart implantation procedures — more than any center worldwide since 2022, according to an April 27 system news release.
Banner’s reputation for having one of the busiest total artificial heart programs has allowed Banner surgeons to consult with other medical centers around the globe, as well as provide guidance to artificial heart manufacturers on surgical techniques, patient selection and management, the release said.
Total artificial hearts are a bridge-to-transplant device for patients with end-stage heart failure waiting for a donor heart. The device keeps patients alive while waiting for a transplant. More than 6 million U.S. adults live with heart failure, and the demand for donor hearts far exceeds the supply, the release said.
