WVU surgeon named president of cardiothoracic group

Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Heart and Vascular Institute’s J.W. Awori Hayanga, MD, was elected president of the Association of Black Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons. 

Dr. Hayanga serves as vice-chair of faculty and clinical affairs and as a professor in the department of thoracic surgery at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute. He is also medical director of the WVU Heart and Vascular Innovation, Research, Education and Prevention Program at WVU Medicine, according to an April 10 news release. 

In his new role, Dr. Hayanga will help guide the organization’s efforts to promote diversity and strengthen pathways for trainees while supporting innovation in cardiothoracic care. 

His work spans clinical care, research and policy, with involvement in national organizations including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
