The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson has established an endowed professorship in honor of cardiothoracic surgeon Gulshan Sethi, MD.

The Gulshan Sethi, MD Endowed Professorship in Cardiothoracic Surgery is funded through a $1 million gift and commitments from more than 60 donors, including former patients, past residents and colleagues, according to an April 9 university news release.

Dr. Sethi joined the university in 1988. He performed the state’s first single-lung transplant in 1989 and established the country’s first master’s degree program in pharmacology and perfusion technology. He has performed more than 15,000 open-heart surgeries and trained generations of surgeons, the release said.

“His pioneering work in cardiothoracic surgery formed the foundation for significant advances in the field that are now considered routine procedures and have resulted in saving thousands of lives in Arizona and beyond,” Michael Abecassis, MD, the Humberto and Czarina Lopez Endowed Dean of the College of Medicine-Tucson, said in the release.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
