Inova builds out cardiology leadership with $75M gift

Fairfax, Va.-based Inova Health System has established five chair positions within the Inova Schar Heart and Vascular program. 

Funding for the positions was made possible by a $75 million gift from Dwight and Martha Schar, according to an Aug. 27 news release from Inova. 

The five chair appointments are as follows: 

  • Wayne Batchelor, MD, president of the Inova Medicine Service Line and director emeritus of interventional cardiology, has been appointed a Schar Chair. 
  • Steven Nathan, MD, medical director of the advanced lung disease and lung transplant program at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, has been appointed a Schar Chair. 
  • Richard Neville, MD, chief of vascular surgery, wound care and hyperbaric medicine at Inova and associate director of Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, has been appointed a Schar Chair. 
  • Christopher O’Connor, MD, president of Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, has been appointed the Schar Distinguished Chair — Inova’s first endowed chair.
  • Garima Sharma, MD, director of preventive cardiology and women’s cardiovascular health at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, has been appointed the  Martha Schar Chair of Women’s Cardiovascular Health.
